This investment has reduced overall hazardous waste shipment quantities by half. Hess Print Solutions purchases reconditioned/recycled wood-based pallets. The recycling programs at Hess Print Solutions include, but are not limited to, paper recycling programs in the pressroom, bindery and office areas including cardboard and spent roll cores, recycling of printing plates, solvent recovery systems in the pressroom, used pallet recycling and solvent neutralization systems in prepress.

With our focus on energy management and environmentally friendly operations, HPS demonstrates commitment to green initiatives and sustainable production practices throughout our operations. As part of an environmentally conscientious industry, HPS will continue to research and implement programs that identify and improve environmental operating efficiencies.
Hess Print Solutions embraces environmentally friendly ideals and continues to reduce our overall environmental impact and carbon footprint. Printers of all sizes are being challenged by their customers to demonstrate that they are producing products that use a manufacturing process that is considered environmentally friendly. Therefore, the printing industry developed a mechanism to demonstrate commitment to economic, social and environmental success. To this end, PIA/GATF and HPS team members are leading the Sustainable Green Printing Steering Committee. The SGP Steering Committee is an industry organization whose mission is “…to encourage and promote participation in the worldwide movement to reduce environmental impact and increase social responsibility of the print and graphic communications industry through sustainable green printing practices.” As a member of the SGP Steering Committee, Hess Print Solutions’ employees were instrumental in developing the criteria and guidelines that will govern the term "Sustainable Green Printer".
In addition to the SGP initiatives, Hess Print Solutions is FSC (Forestry Stewardship Council) Certified. FSC participation intends to eliminate a market that uses timber felled illegally, undermining responsible forest management.
FSC certification and recycling programs are just a small part of the overall green initiatives; and HPS goes far beyond paper and inks in our efforts to be a Green Printer. HPS has installed controls that have reduced natural gas consumption by 50% and energy efficient lighting that reduced consumption by 1.2mm KW annually. With a retooling effort, HPS was able to reduce the number of running air compressors. Additionally, HPS has lowered dryer temperatures by 50°F on four dryers
